Colonne

“Colonna sospesa”
Installazione permanente alla Net-Gallery Firenze, via Guelfa 63r. Maggio 2005

“Suspended column”
Permanent installation at the Net-Gallery in Florence in via Guelfa 63r, May 2005

What appears to be a rusty iron mass is suspended above the ground and held by an invisible thread from the ceiling. The ease with which it can be spun around provokes the fear that it is about to crash  dangerously to the ground.

“Colonna”

“Column”
Installation in the foyer of the  Rifredi Theatre (Teatro di Rifredi), Florence, January 2004.

“The work which the artist has proposed on this occasion has been suggested by the intrinsic value of the place itself and has been rendered concrete by an installation which appears to be a trace of remains dug up from a timeless, mythical past and which appears about to dissolve.
Without any ulterior motive for personal gain the artist intervenes in the spacious, well-lit foyer of this historic theatre through his personal research linked to the theme of impermanency, by using packaging which in this age of consumerism has, for Fresu, a particular meaning. For him these objects die the moment they come into being. They are immediately considered bulky, polluting and useless: you are not even allowed to throw them into the recycling bins for plastic. During their existence, which they spend hidden in the darkness of the tomb-like box which contains them and which protects them from the accidents of the outside world , they are metaphors of the life which Fresu raises to new dignity by having them take on the appearance of rusty old machinery, of crumbling archaeo-industrial remains coming from a mythical place such as the Rifredi neighbourhood with its working-class industrial past.
